The question I will ever hear when I lift my hearer from my ears. I'm living in France, a country in which Filk is less known that the bourrée is in the USA.
La question que j'entends à chaque fois que j'enlève mon casque de mes oreilles. J'habite en France où le Filk est moins connu que la bourrée ne l'est aux USA.
The difficulty then is to answer. Mainly, even I was finding my explanations laborious and dull. It's not enough to speak about Star Treck and other SF topics. Filk is also connected to fantastic litterature, role playing, furry fandom, SCA. The... what?! The Society for Creative Anachronisms... Yet another long, long story.
La difficulté tient dans la réponse. En fait, même moi je trouvais mes explications nulles et laborieuses. Il ne suffit pas de parler de Star Trek ou d'autres aspects de la SF. Le Filk est aussi lié à la litérature fantastique, les jeux de rôles, le fandom furry, la SCA. La... quoi?! La "Society for Creative Anachronisms"... encore une autre longue, longue histoire.
So I have had to find for a more appealing definition. It is always a shame not to be able to explain the thing one is fan of. So I took a look on the Internet (where else?). Found many many things. Read part of it... and realized I had not the faintest idea of the thing as a whole. It was richer, wider, and fairly more complex I had thought.
Alors, j'ai dû chercher une meilleure définition. C'est toujours dommage de ne pas être capable d'expliquer e truc dont on est fan. Alors, j'ai jeté un coup d'oeil sur l'Internet (où, sinon là?). Trouvé pas mal de choses. En ai lu une partie... et réalisé que je n'avais pas un idée d'ensemble du truc. C'était plus riche, plus grand et bien plus complexe que je pensais.
But damn, my problem was not resolved. So I tried to find a newsgroup to talk to other fans of this and that. Found one: rec.music.filk. Was lucky for it was THE filk newsgroup. Made here my first mistakes. ALWAYS read the FAQ before entering a NG (twice if it is a US one)! Damn me.
Mais tout ça ne résolvait pas mon problème. Alors, j'ai cherché un newsgroup afin de parler avec d'autres fans de ci et de ça. En ai trouvé un : rec.music.filk. Chanceux, le gars: c'était LE newsgroup filk. Y ai fait mes premières erreurs. TOUJOURS lire la FAQ avant de poster dans un newsgroup (deux fois si c'est un NG américain). Pas glop.
So I read the FAQ, understood my mistakes and apologized. Then I went on the site from which the FAQ was issued. It was less fuzzy in my head, yet I was measuring how far France is from the USA (an ocean and more)...
Alors, j'ai lu la FAQ, compris mes erreurs, et me suis excusé. Puis je suis allé sur le site duquel la FAQ était issue. C'était moins flou dans ma tête, mais je mesurais à quel point la France est éloignée des USA (bien plus qu'un océan)...
However, I was still willing to write a page about Filk. So I decided to translate the FAQ I was reading, rather than writing something from scratch, with the risk of misunderstandings, inaccuracy, etc. I sent a mail to Kay Shapero, the webmaster, who kindly gave me her authorization. Thanks Kay.

Alors, j'ai décidé de traduire la FAQ que j'avais lue plutôt que d'écrire un truc de zéro, au risque de mal comprendre ou d'être hors propos. But how did I came to listening to Filk music? Simple. Two years ago, I typed in "fish" in a peer-to-peer agent to please a friend who was showing me how simple it was. In fact I had stopped listening to him when he told me my ports had to remain open for a long time (security, security...) After half an hour, the thing had written on MY disk, in MY Program Files directory, in a subfolder it had created for, about a hundred megaoctets of MP3, all with a title containing "fish". And amongst the ton of "shitty noise"(1), was a song, sung by an artist I had never heard of, written by another total stranger. The song was "The Horse Tamer's Daughter". The first artist was Julia Ecklar. The second was Leslie Fish. They will soon become some kind of goddesses but for the moment, I was stunned by the unusaual lyrics (a wichtcraft story). Twas something I had never heard before. I listened and listened it almost twenty times, wondering why people were laughting at the beginning of a song which lyrics were rather "serious". These laughters have been the very little spark. I got the lyrics I don't know where on Yahoo. Then I searched about Julia Ecklar and Leslie Fish (found http://leslie-fish.clan-majere.org/ and www.random-factors.com), read about them, about something called "Filk"...
Mais comment j'en suis arrivé à écouter de la musique Filk? Simple. Il y a deux ans j'ai tapé "fish" dans un agent peer-to-peer pour complaire un ami qui me montrait combien c'était simple. En fait j'avais arrêté de l'écouter dès qu'il m'avait dit que mes ports devaient rester ouverts pendant longtemps (sécurité, sécurité...) Au bout d'une demi-heure, le truc avait écrit sue MON disque dur, dans MON répertoire Program Files, dans un sous-répertoire qu'il avait créé lui-même, environ une centaine de méga-octets de MP3, tous avec un titre qui contenait le mot "fish". Et au milieu de tout ce "shitty noise"(1), se trouvait une chanson chantée par une artiste dont je n'avais jamais entendu parler, écrite par une autre, aussi totalement inconnue. La chanson était "The Horse Tamer's Daughter" (La Fille du dresseur de chevaux). La première des deux artiste était Julia Ecklar. La seconde était Leslie Fish. Elle allait bientôt devenir des sortes de déesses pour moi, mais pour le moment, j'étais interdit par ces paroles si inhabituelles (une histoire de sorcellerie). Quelque chose de jamais entendu auparavant. J'ai écouté et réécouté cette chanson au moins vingt fois, me demandant pourquoi des gens riaient au début d'une chanson dont le thème était "grave". Ces rires ont été la petite étincelle. J'ai obtenu les paroles je ne sais plus où sur Yahoo. Puis, j'ai cherché des renseignements sur Julia Ecklar et Leslie Fish (found http://leslie-fish.clan-majere.org/ and www.random-factors.com), lu des pages et des pages à propos d'un truc qui s'appelait le "Filk"...
No way back. For days, I picked up anything that was given freely on the Internet, wandering from there to there, like MP3.COM. Thank gods, filkers are not greedy. Meanwhile, I had uninstalled the peer-to-peer agent. I asked a longer time to get rid from the dialer agent it had also hidden in my system. Buying some (few - list will be published) CD in a foreign country using a credit card has always been and is still a bit upseting, but I did it.
Pas de marche arrière possible. Pendant des jours, j'ai piqué tout ce qui était disponible gratuitement sur l'Internet, vagabondant ici et là, comme sur MP3.COM. Dieux merci, les filkeurs ne sont pas avare. Entre temps, j'avais désinstallé le client peer-to-peer. Cela m'a demandé plus longtemps pour me débarasser de l'agent dialer qu'il avait caché dans mon système. Acheter des (peu - j'en donnerai la liste) CD dans un pays étranger avec une carte bleue aura toujours quelque chose d'inquiétant, mais je l'ai fait.
That's how I became maybe the first Filk fan in France. I have found other furries, but no Filk fan (fen?) yet. Hey, the aim of these pages is to make you try. The very first album I bought has been "The Horse Tamer's Daughter", on which I also discovered the most beautiful furry song I have ever heard ("Golden Eyes" sung by Julia Eclar, lyrics by Mercedes Lackey).
C'est ainsi que je suis devenu peut-être le seul fan de Filk en France. J'ai trouvé d'autres furries, mais pas encore de fan (fen?) de Filk. Hé, le but de ces pages est de vous faire essayer.
